Objective

Northern Coordinated Action for Recycling Enterprises is a non-profit Society incorporated in 1993. The objective of the Society is to increase the viability of recycling initiatives in northern Alberta. Northern C.A.R.E. assists industry in securing markets and determining practical and innovative approaches to increase participation in recycling initiatives. The Society provides direct advisory, coordination and technical services to municipalities, industry and environmental groups.

Projects Undertaken by Northern C.A.R.E.

1. Facilitating the development of a regional recycling system (collecting newsprint, office paper, glass, plastic and metal), encompassing 24 communities in northern Alberta.
2. Identified opportunities for small scale plastics, glass, tirs, and composting industries.
3. Conducting several industrial waste audits and waste reduction reports.
4. Completion of two regional hazardous waste transfer station feasibility studies.
5. Developing solid waste management plans for member municipalities.
6. Developing a school education and recycling program.
7. Coordinating a used tire round-up and coordinated collection program.
8. Providing assistance to many small scale recycling entrepreneurs.

Projects Planned for 1996-1997

1. Working with local municipal landfill operators to ensure compliance with new environmental legislation.
2. Developing a construction and demolition waste strategy - hosting a workshop to identify local opportunities and solutions.
3. Undertaking a pilot project to demonstrate if municipalities can stimulate markets for materials made from
4. tire crumb.
5. Coordinating a regional hazardous waste round-up.
6. Preparing waste audits for industrial members.
7. Developing additional waste reduction educational materials.
